The San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation is growing its board of directors and adding considerable fundraising experience with four new members, as well as new co-chairs of the organization’s Chief’s Council advisory board.
Joining the Board of Directors are Michele Corbett, David W. Hanses, David M. Mulvaney and Andy Thomas. James F. Mulvaney, Jr. and Robert Sexton have been named co-chairs of the Chief’s Council.

Corbett is the Vice President of Marketing for the San Diego Blood Bank. She began her career at City Hall before moving on to a 20-year career in higher education, managing marketing and communication at both San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene University. She serves on multiple advisory groups connected to helping young people find their passion and purpose, including the Boy Scouts of America’s STEM Exploring Initiative and PLNU’s Marketing Advisory Board. Michele earned her B.A. in communication from PLNU and her M.A. in communication from SDSU.

Hanses is executive director of development at Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Previously, Hanses was director of development at La Jolla Playhouse for four seasons and, prior to that, served as director of external affairs at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for seven years. He has held positions with the MS Society’s Greater Illinois Chapter, The Georgia Conservancy and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. Hanses holds a Bachelor of Special Studies degree from Cornell College.

Mulvaney has served on the board of United Cerebral Palsy, as chair for the Therapeutic Recreational Services and on the State Council for Developmental Disabilities under Governor Schwarzenegger. He is an advocate and fundraiser for Noah Homes and St. Madeline Sophies and is a devoted volunteer at Father Joe’s Villages. Born into a family of community advocates, Mulvaney began volunteering at a young age when he, along with his siblings and parents, served lunch at St. Vincent de Paul’s, delivered meals for Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Head Start and their local church. He and his family have been instrumental in fundraising and board development for many San Diego nonprofits. His professional background includes finance, real estate development and management and director of development at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet.

Thomas is Senior Vice President, Business Development, for Evans Hotels, where he oversees all distribution systems, business development and revenue strategy. Before joining Evans Hotels, Thomas’s career included various hotel manager and opening taskforce management positions with Marriott International, Sheraton, Benchmark Resorts and Hotels, and Princess Resorts. He is a member of CA Travel, the Greater San Diego Business Association, and also serves on the Board of Trustees Member for the La Jolla Playhouse. Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Denver for Hotel Management as well as Regis College.

“Each of these new directors understands the significance of investing in public safety,” said Kevin Leap, who assumed the role of Board Chair/President of the Foundation in January. “These individuals bring extensive experience, talent and energy and will be tremendous assets as we work to further our mission of providing enhanced equipment, training, technology, and community education resources that strengthen the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the entire San Diego region.”

Supporting the Chief’s Council as co-chairs are James F. Mulvaney Jr. and Robert Sexton.

Mulvaney Jr. is Vice President for Alliant Insurance Services. He is a native San Diegan, the fifth of seven children born to Jim and Ruth Mulvaney. Mulvaney Jr. is a graduate of University of San High School and attended both Mesa College and San Diego State University. Like his brother David, he has been a lifelong community advocate and fundraiser alongside his siblings and parents. He has served on the board including Big Brothers/Big Sisters for 10 years, St. Vincent De Paul for 30 years, St. Madeline Sophies, Noah Homes and many more.

Bob has been in the Marketing, Advertising & Communications business for over 30 years. He has managed advertising sales for NBC stations, FOX stations, CBS Television Group over those years. Bob has also been a Station Manager for KUSI-TV in San Diego and WJW-TV in Cleveland, OH. He currently is Owner/CEO of Ad360 Advertising & Communications. Bob has also served his hometown of San Diego with commitments as The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Tourism Authority, The Bishop’s School, The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick & The American Ireland Fund. Bob earned a degree in Communications/Marketing from San Diego State University ’80, where he played soccer. Bob is married to his wife Janie and they have two children, Riley who works for FOX Affiliate Marketing & Bennett, who works in Sales for the NFL – San Francisco 49ers.

They are passionate about strengthening public safety in our region, and we’re already feeling the positive impact of their support.”
